On the cusp of the 4th of July weekend, the American Furniture Manufacturers Association (AFMA) has launched a new website, http://www.whyamIinthisbusiness.org, to help manufacturers and their reps cope with the difficult business climate that has engulfed the industry. President Jerry Wright spoke about the new site at a news conference this morning. "We are aware of how stressful and trying these times are for people in our industry and acknowledge that we have a responsibility to be helpful to our members and their employees and families." The site includes helpful information that it has gathered all in one convenient location for easy access.
One area of the site that has received thousands of clicks already deals with how to handle a stressed out furniture executive or rep...
How to Talk your Furniture Exec off a Ledge

1. Make sure you call the police and other professionals to help you deal with the situation.
2. Family members can be quite persuasive in tense situations. If possible, round up the people who love the executive and have them talk.
3. Most likely the person does not have friends, so talk to them about hope. Remind them of when business was good.
4. Try to remind the executive what they have to live for. Sure their stock options are worthless, but steer away from reminding them of that and remind them of that "big account" that you're close to getting.
Other areas of the site intend to divert attention from how bad business will probably be this summer and focuses instead on manufacturing industries that are worse off than the furniture industry, such as the video cassette manufacturing industry or the dot-matrix printer manufacturing industry.
Wright assures his members that the site will grow over the coming months and is open to suggestions from members on how to improve it.
